I’ve had a Classic (no gullet) for two years and a Carlton (with gullet) for 6 months. My horse goes equally well in both and his back is in great shape.

About 6 months ago, I called Ansür intending to replace my old second hand classic with a new one. I wanted the new pommel and a suede seat. When I said I was an upper level dressage rider, the lady offered me the choice between another Classic and a Carlton, which I knew nothing about.

She said it had three things going for it: 1. Extra padding on the underneath side so it can be shaped for the rider’s upper thigh to make the saddle feel narrower. 2. It gives riders the choice of an Ansür saddle that has a full length gullet. 3. This is the one that really sold me, she said having a gullet gives the saddle more lateral stability. So, I bought a Carlton.

I find that I do not get quite as much “feel” as I do when riding my old Classic. This is probably because there is some more padding between my seat and my horse. However, the lateral stability is really good. I do feel more secure in it. I don’t feel quite so much like I’m riding a 50 gallon barrel. And my opinionated FEI horse likes it. He loves his Classic so I was thrilled that he moved as well in the Carlton. Is every FEI horse a princess? LOL
